Heritage Point of Teaneck Residents Learn about the History of Teaneck Creek Park

TEANECK, N.J., June 9, 2010 – Representatives from the Teaneck Creek Conservancy (TCC) recently met with residents at Heritage Pointe of Teaneck to present a seminar on the history of Teaneck Creek Park. Richard Mills, an artist in residence at Teaneck Creek Park who focuses on landscape, led the informative presentation.
What was once an unofficial dumping ground during construction for Routes 80 and 95, Teaneck Creek Park has since been transformed into a beautiful haven in nature. In 2000, volunteers and environmentalists began the process of removing old vehicles and tires that littered the grounds of what is now Teaneck Creek Conservancy and transformed large, immovable construction pipes into large sculptures.
As the park began to take shape, 1.8 miles of hiking trails and an outdoor classroom were created. The wetlands are now enjoyed by the surrounding community, including numerous residents at Heritage Pointe of Teaneck.
“Residents of Heritage Pointe have started a walking club, touring Teaneck Creek Park two or three times a week,” noted Donna Zayat, executive director at Heritage Pointe of Teaneck. “In fact, they went for a walk before the presentation started, and spoke with Richard about their love of the property after the event.”
The presentation also highlighted TCC programs including the volunteer group “Weed Warriors.” After completing an initial training program, the volunteers work independently or in groups to help control invasive species of weeds along the sides of the trail for a few hours a week in the spring and fall.
Heritage Pointe of Teaneck recently formed an alliance with the Teaneck Creek Conservancy in support of the TCC's mission to care for this beautiful natural park and the programs it offers the community.
