FOR SENIORS, HOTTEST SUMMER DAYS MAY POSE HEALTH RISKS
Strategy for staying cool is essential
TEANECK, NJ (July 14, 2011) – When summer temperatures reach extreme levels, health risks multiply … and seniors are particularly susceptible. The safest strategy is awareness of key practices for staying cool.
The central issue on hot, humid days is that, because of natural, physiological changes related to the aging process, seniors are unable to cool as quickly or efficiently as when they were younger.
“For the family and friends of older people, it’s important to keep in mind that a bit of oversight may be helpful,” explains Kathleen Masi, director of Marketing at Heritage Pointe of Teaneck, a full-service retirement community. “The most valuable piece of advice may simply be to spend more time indoors, in an air-conditioned environment.”
Other key strategies for not overheating, as recommended by the professionals at Heritage Pointe of Teaneck, are:
- Don’t completely eliminate time spent outside; just try to schedule it first thing in the morning or early in the evening, when temperatures tend to be lower.
- Drink plenty of clear liquids. But be sure to avoid alcohol or caffeine, both of which can lead to dehydration over time.
- Dress in cool, natural fabrics, like cotton – and select lighter colors, which help reflect sunlight. Steer clear of clothing made from synthetic materials.
- While all medications should be taken exactly as prescribed, it’s wise to consult a doctor about prescriptions that may be impacted by sun exposure.
- Always wear sunscreen, as well as sunglasses, to protect against harmful UV rays.
