When it comes to immunizations, awareness is crucial for seniors
No one’s too old to be immunized
TEANECK, NJ (September 8, 2011) – While “National Immunization Month” – August – has passed, the need for seniors to protect themselves and those around them is truly a year-round concern.
The experts at Heritage Pointe of Teaneck, a full-service retirement community, are consistently focused on sharing information with their residents on the various types of immunizations. Specifically, the four key immunizations for seniors are as follows:
- Influenza: One annual dose, every fall / winter.
- Pneumococcal: A single dose, for everyone 65 or older who hasn’t previously been vaccinated.
- Tetanus / Diphtheria / Pertussis: For everyone 65 or older, particularly those who have contact with infants. An immunization booster shot is required every 10 years.
- Zoster (shingles): For everyone 60 or older who hasn’t previously been vaccinated.
“Keeping up with appropriate immunizations is really a life-long responsibility,” explains Englewood-based internist Dr. Richard Laudadio. “It’s about protecting your health, and no one should ever leave their doctor’s office without first making sure they’re up-to-date on all necessary vaccinations.”
Seniors should also be aware that additional immunizations may be necessary if they plan to travel outside the United States.
